Beautiful Flowers – A Valentine’s Day Staple

9 March 2010 | No Comments » | Adriana Noton

How Valentine’s Day evolved is a fascinating story. In early Roman times, the Roman Feast of Lupercalia was a celebration of pagan fertility held on February 14 that honored the Queen of Oman known as Juno, the Roman gods and goddesses, as well as the goddess of marriage and women. During the celebrations, women would write special love letters and place the letters in an urn. The men would then retrieve a letter from the urn and passionately court the woman who wrote the particular love letter.

The most well known origin of Valentine’s Day comes from a 3rd century Roman priest by the name of Valentine. Against the explicit orders of Emperor Claudius II, Valentine performed secret marriages. The Emperor prohibited marriages because he thought that unmarried soldiers were more apt to enlist in his army. Valentine was caught and sentenced to death. The story says that Valentine conveyed a letter to a friend which was signed ‘From Your Valentine’ just prior to his execution on February 14 in 270 A.D. In 496 A.D., in honor of St. Valentine as the patron saint of lovers, Pope Gelasius named St. Valentine’s Day on February 14th. Ever since that time, people all over the world have been celebrating Valentines Day.

Flowers have become a staple of Valentines Day. 8 March 2010 | No Comments » | John Jay Amarant

All seasons have their advantages and disadvantages when organizing a wedding, but Fall has so much to offer. It is a beautiful season and you will still have the glow of a summer sun tan. The rich colors of fall combine wonderfully with the white or ivory of a wedding dress.

Once you have decided on the color theme for your wedding you can continue this through the dress accessories, and any wraps or shawls you may choose to have.

1. Flower Colors – Although many people associate wedding bouquets with spring, the most romantic colour is red. This is a warm color which is a great base for your fall wedding bouquet. Instead of mixing your red with a pink of spring, consider a deep saffron color. These mixed with rich green leaves will form a spectacular fall wedding bouquet.

2. Colors For Your Ribbons – Hand tied wedding bouquets are very popular, these offer a great opportunity to add an extra color to your wedding color theme. If your bouquet is going to be deep rich colors, you may want to choose a color which will sparkle or lighten the look. This can be achieved with the metallic looking color range, especially a gold color.

3. Continuing Your Color Theme – The colors you use on your wedding day will be crucial to the atmosphere you want to create. It is always a good idea to continue the color theme of your bouquet throughout the wedding. For example, if you have decided to choose a gold ribbon for your bouquet you can have the same color in the brides maids hair, or edging the ring cushion held by the page boy.

To continue the theme across the reception you could match the color of your napkins to the ribbon of your bouquet, or base your floral table center pieces around your wedding bouquet.

Nature has provided all the colors you need for a beautiful fall wedding. These rich, warm colors will fill your day with romance and atmosphere.

A good place to find striking fall color combinations is in haberdashery shops and also look at photo shoots in magazines – there are plenty of ideas to incorporate.

How To Keep Your Garden Alive Through Winter

7 March 2010 | No Comments » | Tom Doerr

Most gardeners go into hibernation as soon as autumn hits and don’t emerge again until spring but there are plenty of things to keep a garden active throughout the winter months which don’t mean you have to sit indoors gazing at your starving peace lily in your conservatory. Considering this past winter it may well be worth keeping up an active gardening plan otherwise your fingers may remain skin coloured for many months indeed.

To get ready for the spring you can cultivate cover crops which will improve the soil for the following season and also give you something to keep you busy. Decomposing compost will also continue providing you with plenty of fuel to get going with your gardening when the sun starts to shine.

Greenhouses, cloches or cold frames are an understandable choice for growing plants during the winter. You can start by planting bulbs such as day lilies, tulips and daffodils in the late autumn/early winter which will possibly bloom towards the end of winter before the spring season even begins, so you won’t have to walk out to a dull garden.

If you want to enjoy some colour over the cold months try growing them in containers or raised beds which will warm up easier, rid moisture and provide a better soil for them to survive winter. These plants may not usually be the pride of your patch but they will add life and when spring arrives you can plant them directly into the ground and watch them flourish.

Evergreen plants need a supply of nutrients and a key to maintaining the health of your garden through the winter it would be your composting. Make sure it gets turned regularly and has a supply of organic material. It can also be a great resource for younger plants in the next season when the compost is ready.

If you want to grow some vegetables during winter there is a variety of frost-hardy crops that will make use of your soil and give a return. Quick maturing vegetables like turnips can be an ideal addition along with some varieties of onions, garlic and leeks which may not create outstanding results during winter but will still make use of your garden.

All You Ever Need Discover About Making Floral Arrangements

7 March 2010 | No Comments » | Peter Flowers

Making wonderful flower arrangements is becoming more popular but it is not just a case of chucking odd flowers here and there into a container. There is an art to this craft and it requires a lot of dedication, skill, patience and artistic flair to make the perfect flower arrangement.

Firstly, you need to choose the right sort of oasis foam for your arrangement. Generally, the green foam is used for fresh flowers and brown foam for dried or artificial ones. The foam should be soaked through for about 20 minutes in a bucket or bowl. It is not recommended that you simply place the oasis under a running tap. This can lead to dry spots in the foam that are not visible to the naked eye. It is also advisable to only use the foam once.

You can now progress onto the stage of shaping your oasis foam. You can begin by shaping the corners of the foam which should be made at an angle. For your arrangement to look its best, the foam should sit at least 1 inch higher than the container in which it is to be placed. You can now opt for one medium hole or several small holes to allow for watering the display everyday.

You are now ready to pick your flowers and decide how you wish to arrange them. The flower stems should then be cut at a 45 degree angle and placed into the oasis. The stems of the flowers need to stay in contact with the foam when being pushed in. If you need to pull a stem out to rearrange, make a new hole as the original one will have left an air pocket.

There are also ways in which to make your flower arrangements last longer. For example, always use a clean vase or container. Any leaves on the flowers that will be below water level in a vase need to be removed as they will rot and create bacteria.

Also crucial is keeping your arrangements out of direct sunlight as this will reduce their shelf life. When picking the flowers to use, try to take a range of flowers in each stage of development. This helps to make your display more interesting for a longer period of time.

Making your own flower arrangements is easy once you get the hang of it. Of course, you may prefer to actually purchase ready-made arrangements for functions such as weddings, parties or funerals. A range of displays are available such as table centerpieces, wreaths and bouquets.

Ordering flower arrangements for delivery is very simple to do, particularly if you do it online. There are many suppliers to choose from, most of which have a catalog on their website for you to choose the perfect display. The cost is usually cheaper too and your chosen arrangement can be with you in less than 24 hours. Online ordering and delivery is a more convenient, faster option when it comes to buying flowers for a loved one or for a specific function.

There is an art to making perfect, breathtaking flower arrangements. It is not just a case of throwing the flowers together in an attempt to make them appear spectacular. More info on this as well as Online Flower Delivery .
